Art vs. Design - An international Open Call for Unique TalentImages are power. In this dynamic era compelling design can move millions and transcendent art can inspire a generation. From cave paintings of early man to today's industrial designers, art & design has uniquely shaped the world around us, each in its own distinct way. This contest is designed to answer the age old question: What shapes our world more, art or design? To find the answer, we need YOU to enter the dialogue. Details: www.artistswanted.org Mark Mothersbaugh, acclaimed artist and lead singer of art-rock band DEVO leads a panel of judges including Jarrett Gregory (curator at NYC's New Museum) and Donwan Harrell (founder and creative director of Akademiks clothing) in selecting the top artist or designer to be featured at a gala reception at the New Museum in June. The public also plays judge - determining the most powerful medium of the moment - in an online face-off that pits art submissions against design submissions. Opportunities will be created for everyone who participates and we are awarding over $11,000 in prizes. Including:
Registration is open now and continues through Midnight May 31st.
Details: www.artistswanted.org Art VS Design was put together by a handful of Brooklyn based artists and designers who have experienced first-hand the difficulties of achieving national attention. We believe both Art & Design hold a powerful place in our society and it is our intention to break-out new talent through a process that is dynamic and open-ended.

Neighbourhood Block Party @ Schiller Square, Vienna on 19th May 2009On 19th of May 2009 the Neighbourhood Block Party took place at the Schiller Square in front of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria.
In the realm of the study class 'Art in Public Space', led by Mona Hahn, the students of Mona Hahn, artist and Academy Professor, have invited the neighbours surrounding the Schiller Square to take part in a Block Party especially organised for them.
To involve the local community in the project, the 'Neighbours' have been invited to attend the party, especially organised for them, to get connected to the Academy students and their peers and friends.
The party was very relaxed and highlight was the cake contest of delicious cakes made by the neighbours and entered in a competition. All there is to say, all of the cakes were delicious, but there had to be chosen a winner as it goes for competitions - to be honest all of the cakes have been winners for me!! - Chocolate addict by nature.. ;)
The project was titled ‘The Utopia of a Collective Art’ and has engaged in a debate on the question: ‘If Art HAS GOT, KNOWS or NEEDS Standards? Or after all: Hang it lower!’
The artists that have realised the project and organised the Block Party are as follows - amongst them para_SITE Gallery artist and parasite-net member Daniel Hafner: Sabine Gangnus, Daniel Hafner, Bernd Hofbauer, Bettina Kattinger, Sarah Kienpointner, Thomas Lehner, Nadine Lemke, René Stessl, Arthur Summereder, Michael Suszynski, Ulrike Wagendorfer.
‘We work in contrast to personal relationships, regular meetings and sociability.’ (Group Art in Public Space)

Preview para_SITE Gallery opwning for curators & collectors, 22.05.2009The preview of the para_SITE Gallery especially organised for collector's & curators as well as special guests was a great success.
We spent a lovely evening and had excellent food (says the chef herself ;)) so to speak as a starter Sweet Potatoe cocnut creme soup with safran and ginger and followed by a risotto nero with squid and safran & ginger topped up with freshly grinded parmesan and as a dessert chocolate cake made by 'Super woman' (as we secretely call her - and its certainly totally true you would agree when u'd tried this cake) with a self made strawberry sauce made by 'Super Tini' topped up with the rest of the fresh strawberries.
Be there early tomorrow and you get some left overs that are now resting in the fridge but be as good if not even better tomorrow!! Maybe I'll make Risotto squid nero polenta rissoles tomorrow instead - delicious too.
C u tomorrow and all my love,
Daniela (Haberz)

Vienna Fair/ Show by Adam Budak - Vienna, May 2009
This year's Vienna Fair 2009 was quite interesting and a few good works to be discovered.
The professional VIP viewing was crowded and good to catch up with art people from all over the world. Lot's of art talk and watching art until late at night.
What else do you need ;)
Artsits that I have discovered there are new galleries I have discovered or visited for the first time in person are Projektraum Viktor Bucher who runs a gallery space in his own appartment and right next to it the space by Karol Winiarzyk, whom I first met in Graz at the Spike Unlimited evening at the Kunsthaus Graz. Great places to check out in the Praterstrasse 13/ 1/ 2 (Bucher) and 12 (Winiarzyk) in Vienna. A good space I haven't heard about before is Andreas Huber Gallery and all three of them commissioned Adam Budak (Curator of Kunsthaus Graz and last year's Manifesta's Rovereto site in Italy) to curate a show in a former Market hall in Landstrasse Wien Mitte. Nothing else to excpect than a perfect setting and perfect artists chosen. My favorite piece was by Clemens Hollerer who is also a parasite-net member and an artist to be closely watched with a strong future ahead of him that has started internationally (Australia, New York and Belgium where he absolved the HISK art school in the last few years) and is recocnised in Austria peu a peu already.
So there is lots going on in Vienna right now which for a while has been a little provincial with regards to good shows. Defenitely a place to be visited now if you're interested in good shows and promising artists.
So long my review about Vienna and more to come from LOOP Video Art Fair and Venice Biennial in mid June 2009.
All the best,
Daniela (Haberz)
